TEST OF WRITTEN ENGLISH (TWE)

In the TWE examination you will be asked to write a short essay of 200-300 words on a given topic, written a period of 30 minutes. The TWE tests your ability to generate and organize ideas, to support these ideas with examples or evidence and to compose in standard written English, in response to an assigned topic. TWE is scored on a range of 1-6 and a minimum of 4.5 is needed to prove proficiency in written English.

Some institutions use the TWE scores in addition to the TOEFL scores to evaluate the English proficiency of applicants.

You cannot register to take the TWE only. Both TOEFL and TWE must be taken on the same day. There are no separate fees charged by ETS for the TWE. The TWE is administered as part of the TOEFL test.
